All modules are important and complementary to business practices. You miss the point why this software packages exist in the first place. They are created to help Process things faster and better. Is there a business process that is not important? No!!!!
By the way MM is just as vertical as FI is. MM is not limited to manufacturing, because the Financial services on Wall Street and around the World use the MM processes to package their services. It all depends on how much you know, meaning you need to know more than just one single module to be a key person for your company. Like the packages themselves, get your training on the module that will help you do your job better.
Every module is important; each and everyone of them is just as vast and you cannot know the totality of any one module; your job requirements will dictate what complimentary modules you might need to know enough of for you to do your job well.
