I finally resolved this by using the old Assets configuration transaction ORFA, followed the menu down to the same spot that is OAYZ in the new IMG, and the Useful Life field was not greyed out here. So I was able to add in the default useful life for all asset classes in both Charts of Depreciation.

I want to be able to assign the default useful life to each asset class, so that the user does not have to fill this in during AS01 Create Asset.
The Useful Life field is greyed out when I go into each asset class in OAYZ.
What have I missed out?
