You could use a BADI from SE18/SE19 or userexit EXIT_SAPMF02K_001 for vendors and EXIT_SAPMF02D_001 for c ustomers.

Within the userexit check tables BSIK / BSID for the vendor / customer for items that exist. For example after doing a "select" check for SY-SUBRC = '0'. If it does then open items exists for the vendor / customer.
