If the only reason you're undertaking such a task is to have uniformity in the look of the cost and profit centers, I would humbly suggest you don't bother. SAP can have up to 10 characters in the cost/profit centers and it won't care at all if you mix the lengths. Even in reporting, unless you've custom built everything to only 7 characters, SAP would still display 10. I would suggest that the new areas be 8 characters, leaving the old areas as 7.

I would not recommend trying to update this data in place.

If you really must move the data from the 7 character to the 8, then you will have to decide how you want to do that, at what level (summary into the new or detail), whether you want to open prior periods; even if it's only on the CO side there are issues with cross-company postings wanting to change the books of record as you move the data out of the old and into the new.

Subject: From Seven to Eight Digits Cost/Profit Center

Hi!

Currently we are running on SAP R3 ECC 5, this has been established in our company for 7 years.

We just had a meeting with the management that they are planning to add Key Account Managers per branch and the implementation would be 2013. Obviously, I'll create additional cost/profit center for those.
Cost and profit center codes were configured 7 digits they like to add additional 1 digit for better monitoring of sales, cost, expenses, etc.

Q1. Is it possible to re code from 7 to 8 digit cost/profit center?

Q2. If possible, how can we integrate the historical data of 7 digits to 8 digits cost/profit?

Please help me.
Open for any suggestions, valuable inputs will be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Richard Galicia
