After only 5 years, they shouldn't be archiving all that much. 5 years is
where our first records get archived.

I'd put my money on archiving. In our system, MKPF, MSEG, and RESB (all tables involved in the tcodes you mention) are some of the largest, most active tables in the system. archiving your reservations and goods movements can have a HUGELY beneficial effect on performance.
