Subject: DIR_ORAHOME, is this an obsolete parameter on appservers?

I have searched sapnet and not found anything specific regarding this directory parameter and am not even sure it is needed anymore. I have recently installed some Linux application servers on different 700 and 701 systems, the DBCI on all is solaris/oracle. The app servers appear to run fine but the installations did not create profiles with values for DIR_ORAHOME. When I go to AL11 the DIR_ORAHOME is blank....according to note 830578 the tnsnames.ora files reside in an oracle directory under the /sapmnt/sid/profile directory. Oracle client is instantclient under 10g and there is nothing under /oracle/sid/102_64. So what do you guys have to say about this parameter/directory? And second what have you done with heterogeous environments where the app servers are using a different OS from the DB/CI?
