My client also uses COPA to compute the royalty and I just helped them
automate the calculation and FI posting.

My client sells brand based products and we just use CO-PA that keeps a value per billing and a special condition type (license fee). At the end of the month the Accounting Department does an FI-AR credit note and we send the money to the brand companies.

I guess you could also consider using SD's rebate functions too.
