Hi Roy,
I am designing a system for my client and document splitting isn't part of their requirement at this stage. Should they require this in future, what would be implications of not switching it on at this point in time?

There is no other solution, I am afraid. Either you switch on document splitting in the one company or switch it off in the other. End of story. Since doc splitting is the future in SAP I would suggest you go that route.
