What is the size of your Database?
Why don't you use the R3load (system export/import)? Table splitting option would reduce the overhead during export/import.

Alternatively, can your UNIX team salvage a server that can run a clone of your PRD database?
copy over all the filesystems to this server, DNS isolate the server, run the DDL generation and start the R3load export using SAPinst.
This would involve very less downtime on your PRD, as you are running the export off a duplicate server.

Raghav
