YES! IT IS DEAD! Has been for a long time. There is a much better way now. Check out the UPS Developer Kit and use their APIs. You do not need additional software. You can not only ship, track and rate, you can also verify your addresses.

What kind of labels are you referring to for additional software? The UPS labels? The label image is stored in a SAP Form. The additional label making software that most company acquire helps in 2 ways: 1) it is easier to make other kinds of labels such as licenses plates or other custom labels the customer may require on the shipment, and 2) it has the printer drivers needed to talk to the label printers, i.e., Zebra, Dymo, HP, etc. Special printer drivers are needed to tell the printer that it is now going to print labels with special characters such as UPS's "Smart Label" or bar codes. Zebra and Dymo already know they are label printers; HP's can also be told to print labels.

Think about how you were going to do this if you were trying to do it from home. How are you going to print labels at home on your standard printer? If you buy a box of Avery labels from an office supply store, the labels are going to be 2 across and 5 down. It will take a special printer driver to tell your printer at home to print the same thing 10 times on the page. Avery supplies those printer drivers on their website for their label products.

UPS will let you calculate and pay for the shipping of your package on their website. Once you have finished entering the information, UPS sends the image of what their label needs to look like down to an 8 1/2 x 11 inch sheet of paper you can print at home, fold in half and tape to your box before mailing. You can then hand your box to any UPS driver and they can take it without any further exchange of information or currency. All of your information has been stored in the "Smart Label". If you can do it at home without additional software, you can do it through SAP without additional software.

I have interfaced with the small parcel companies many times and in many ways over the years. They have now made it very easy for us with these APIs. Hope this helps to answer some of your questions. Let me know if you have any other ones. XSI is not the direction SAP is going with transportation in the future. Event Management is the solution for tracking and offers a lot more bang for the buck!
