Looked into this a bit further and I'm afraid you are out of luck.
The pre-requisite for this functionality is for the SAP programmer (who wrote the transcation) to have included code to look for a default variant if none has been selected.
Unfortunately, this code has not been included in the program for transaction LT22, consequently, selected variants will work but default variants will not be considered.
