Hello IT ToolBoxers,
To add to the info provided by Pascal (which, as usual, is absolutley spot on - appreciate your contribution Pascal!)...
1) If you enter a Condition Type in the Pricing Procedure assignment table (V_T683V-KARTV) then, during sales order entry, that Condition Type will default into the line item display in the "Overview" screens, i.e. (as Pascal pointed out) the Condition Type and an "Amount" field appears - along with all the other "item" fields (such as item description, plant, item category, profit centre, etc) - and you can enter a condition value (in the "Amount" field) directly from the Overview screen, without having to drill down to the item level Conditions screen.
NB!! You it looks like you MUST configure the Document Type's Transaction Flow Screen Sequence Group (V_TVAK-KOPGR) = AU: Sales Order - I found that the condition type does NOT appear for a Document Type assigned SeqGrp GA: Credit/Debit Memo, for example.
2) With respect to the misleading online help reference to "double-line entry screen" referred to by Barb's response (below), from my hazy memory of a release 4.0B system I seem to recall being able to select a double line entry/display option in the Sales Order, which presented the user with 2 lines of data entry fields per sales order item. I note that the Document Type config (txn VOV8) still offers a Transaction Flow "Function Code for Overview Screen = OID1: Double-line Overview" but that it is restricted to use with IS-OIL. So the online help appears not to have kept abreast of the changes since ye olde 4.0B or thereabouts, when double line entry WAS generally available, not just to IS-OIL implementations.
Regards,
Michael.
Actually it is the condition type you see in the line item, for which
you can enter a value (fast entry without having t go to the condition
screen)
Regards,
Pascal.

procedure determination

I questioned that myself. The helptext for the field says:
"Proposed condition type for fast entry. The condition type that the
system automatically proposes in the double-line entry screen during
sales order processing.
Procedure: Enter a condition type. If you leave the field blank, the
system displays the active price condition during sales order
processing.
Exception: If you change a condition manually, this will be displayed in
the double-line entry screen."
Since I don't know what the double-line entry screen is, this helptext
isn't of much help to me except to understand that this is some sort of
default pricing condition type.
