Another possible definition for Non-Stock is those material masters to
ensure repeatable consistent ordering to a specification but without the
need to carry physical stock of the items. For example you need to
identify the MFG, MGF part number and other criteria for a pump coupling,
but it is one that is not very critical to have in stock. To ensure that
users will buy the correct item, create a non-stock material number and
assign it to the BOM of the equipment. This ensures that each time it will
be ordered correctly.

Another use is assigning non-stock items on a task list for either PM or
repetitive rebuilds. In either case the materials will only be ordered and
delivered from a vendor when the Task list is used on a Maint Order.

Maintenance or operations that does a lot of project related work, would
particularly benefit from Non-stock material numbers. This allows for
standard materials, but doesn't require keeping inventory to meet one time
needs.

Another advantage to creating Non-stock material numbers is to determine
how often a paticular item is used. This would help with analysis to
determine if this should continue as non-stock or should be turned into a
stock item. This is hard to analyze using free text non-stock.

You do not need to create a separate material type for non-stock, just
change your MRP values for the material master. So it is possible to have
a Stock item change to Non-Stock and vice versa.

Subject: Stock versus nonstock items (definition or basis for judgment)

Stock items means the value and stock of the material will be booked in inventory.
Non-stock items means the value of the material will be captured under cost centres because the value and stock of the material will not be booked under inventory.
