The system is looking only at the AAA to ZZZ part. It is not taking into account the second half of what you want (60000 to 69999 and so on).
I'd suggest you reverse the numbering - 60000AAA to 69999ZZZ and try that out.

Can someone explain how the external number determines if there is an overlap?
For internal orders we wanted one order type to number AAA60000 TO ZZZ69999 and another order type to number AAA70000 to ZZZ79999. When we try to set up the number ranges, we get a message that the numbering is overlapping.
