B. Dey,
The SAP supported methods are Batch Management (more for bulk items) and Serial Number Tracking (more for individual items). You could do a conversion of existing stock or a transition as the stock turns over.
Yes, both are more data to enter in the transactions.

What is the volume for the capex transactions? What % is that volume of the overall MM department volume? For any significant volume, companies scan using bar-code or ID tags, and SAP tracks very well, with Batch Management or Serial Number Tracking.
For lower volumes, with reports from Project Systems showing the PO, GR, and GI for each detailed WBS, one may be able to track which items went where, without a batch or serial number.

Generally Capex items are acquired once, and become Assets or Equipment. A one-time activity could tie the items to the PO/GR/GI. Use available text fields in the master records to make the links.
A common activity in construction is to verify the name plate data (often with a camera image and GIS identification). Connecting this data to the Assets or Equipment then allows someone to use vendor supplied data and connect the items to the PO or Delivery.

The data from the vendor with the delivery must include the identifying batch or serial numbers. If electronic, you could get the numbers into a text field in the GR/Delivery/PO. Or is the paperwork scanned, add as an attachment?

Regards,
TRE

Subject: Material Tracking in GI

Hi Gurus,

We procure capex items using WBS element in account assignment. Our user want to track materials in GI as per GR or PO number. I've suggested them to activate batch management in material master. But it is not feasible to activate batch in those materials of which stock is already present. Also it is hectic work for MM department & they do not want to do. Is there any other option available to track materials in GI so that we can find, from which GR or PO, the material has been came from?

Thanks in advance,
B. Dey
