[sap-acct] How to change length of check number

When we went live some preceding zeroes were ignored in the check lots, but now the check numbers have reached a point where we need the digits that were initially ignored.
The system does not allow me to enter the longer numbers, because it is inconsistent with the length of previous check numbers. The system gives error message no. FIBL517 which I tried to disable so I can change the number length. The system did not let me change the statuts for the message.
Any other ideas on this will be much appreciated.
