Why you don't try to use batches? you can use the batch number as a serial number or you can use batches with characteristics and one of those could be the serial number

Hello Steve,
I see that you are on the same boat now as i was in 4 months ago regarding tracking the equipments in the warehouse using serial numbers. Unfortunately, SAP doesn't have a solution for this. But i see your explanation and proposal and think that your approach may complicate the process in WM and other inventory related processes. Why don't try to prototype the functionality in sandbox using Handling Unit Management and the current approach that you described. I agree upto certain extent that HU makes process bit difficult to understand and work with initially. But compared to adding so much custom functionality going with standard HU process would make things easier for implementation as well as support aspect.
I did quite a bit of research on this area and finally decided to use the HU functionality with serial numbers and we currently are in the testing phase of the solution. Please let me know if you have any more questions.
